General Broadband Setup Guide

Summary:
A guide to setting up your broadband connection that applies to most types of broadband hardware.

Once your broadband has been activated, use this 8-step guide to help you get started quickly and easily.

1. Confirm you have everything you need before starting your setup. Check the documentation that came with your broadband hardware, and ensure you have all relevant cables, CDs and microfilters.

2. Read the instructions that came with your hardware to see if you need to install any software drivers before you install the hardware. If so – insert the installation CD and follow the on-screen instructions.

3. Plug microfilters into your broadband enabled telephone socket.

The microfilter stops interference from other telephone equipment from affecting your broadband service. The incorrect placement of microfilters is a common cause of broadband faults – so please take extra care when you plug yours in.

Your broadband hardware should always be plugged into a microfilter. If you have devices attached to extension sockets on the same line, they should also be plugged into a microfilter.

How to connect your microfilter

4. Plug one end of your USB or Ethernet cable into your broadband hardware. Plug the other end into your PC's USB or Ethernet socket. Note that if you are installing a wireless router, use your wireless connection instead of any optional cables.

5. Plug the "dsl" cable into your broadband hardware socket and the other end into the "dsl" socket of the microfilter you plugged in during step 2.

6. If your broadband hardware requires a separate power supply, you should attach this to your hardware and plug it into a power socket. Then switch the device on.

7. Setup your connection:

If you have a USB modem or PCI card:
You should be able to setup your connection details by double clicking on the broadband icon, normally in the lower right hand corner of your screen. This will open your modem settings window where you enter your username and password.

If you have a router (wired or Wireless):
To set up your connection settings you need to access the router control screens. These are usually accessible using a web browser. Check your router instructions on how to do this.

Once you have access to your router setup screens, enter your username and password.

8. Click on a Connect button in order to connect to your broadband account. Once clicked you will have access to the Internet. To go online just open your browser or email program.
